Description:

With the appearance of fresh produce in the garden, at the farmer’s market and at roadside stands, it is it is time to begin thinking about home food preservation. Family Consumer Science Extension Agent Renay Knapp will teach a series of classes throughout the summer on how to preserve those fresh fruits, vegetables and meats. There will be classes during the day as well as in the evening.

The first of these hands-on workshops will be on canning fruits and fruit juices using the hot water bath method. At the second workshop, soft spreads (jam, jelly, etc.) and pickles will be prepared and preserved using the hot water bath method. The third workshop will be on using the pressure canner to for vegetables. The fourth workshop will be on preserving meat by using the pressure canner.

Workshop dates:

Fruits and Fruit Juices – Wednesday June 26th 1-4 p.m. or Thursday June 27th 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Soft Spreads and Pickles – Wednesday July 10th 1-4 p.m. or Monday July 8th 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Vegetables – Thursday August 1st from 1-4 p.m. or Tuesday July 9th 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Meat – Wednesday August 14th from 1-4 p.m. or Monday July 22nd 5:30-8:30 p.m.

All classes will be held at the Transylvania Cooperative Extension office, 106 E. Morgan St., Brevard. Pre-registration and a fee of $15 is required for each of these classes, and space is limited, so call 828.884.3109 or email mmickew@ncsu.edu to save your spot for these workshops.
