Most cattle producers have questioned whether or not their bulls were breeding all of their cows or heifers. About 20 percent of bulls examined will not be satisfactory breeders. Therefore, the Caswell County Extension Center in conjunction with Caswell County Cattlemen's Association will be conducting the breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) clinic on bulls on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 starting at 8:00 am to 12:00 noon on the Lawrence Bernard Farm located on 5235 Mountain Hill Road in Milton, North Carolina off of Highway 57/62 North of Milton. Dr. Pete Fulper will be the veterinarian performing the BSE clinic.
Breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) is a method that has been developed to assess breeding potential of bulls for natural mating. A complete BSE consists of (1) physical examination, (2) measurement of scrotal size, and (3) semen evaluation for sperm motililty (movement) and abnormal morphology (structure and shape).
A complete BSE for a bull will only cost $60.00 versus paying $175.00 for a vet to come to your place and complete a BSE on your bull. Bulls should have not been breeding cattle for at least 30 days prior to a BSE test. Also, bulls need to be held in good trailers before unloading. After the bulls are tested we will load them directly back into their trailers.
If you plan on bringing bull(s), we would appreciate it if you would call Joey Knight at 336-694-4158 to let him know how many bulls and the approximate time of arrival. This way we can better schedule the testing.
If you have any questions, feel free to give Joey a call. Just remember, one bad bull or poor breeder will lose you more than $60.00 in one calving season. Let's have another successful BSE clinic for the eleventh year in a row here in Caswell County. Note, if we can test more than 15 bulls that day, the cost for testing will only be $55.00 per bull. For directions or other information on the clinic, call Joey Knight at 336-694-4158 (office).
See you there on Wednesday, October 9th!

Fresh Produce Good Agricultural Practices Workshop Series
North Carolina State University and North Carolina Cooperative Extension are partnering with the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA) to deliver workshops across the state with the aim of providing farmers with the tools to reduce food safety risks and meet market requirements.
This two-part Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) workshop series will address how farmers of all sizes can achieve USDA GAPs certification, deliver information on principles of
fresh produce safety and on-farm hazard assessment, as well as provide assistance with creating a fresh produce farm safety plan.
The first workshop, Principles of Fresh Produce Safety and Navigating the USDA GAP Audit, takes place in a farm environment and will be based on newly developed components focused on navigating a GAPs audit. This workshop will combine classroom and on-farm instruction to provide producers with the tools needed to identify potential food safety concerns as well as strategies to minimize contamination. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance that fulfills a portion of the eligibility requirements to receive up to $600 in GAPs Cost Share assistance from CFSA.
The second workshop, Fresh Produce Safety Program and Plan Development will provide direct assistance to producers in completing a fresh produce safety plan. Attendees will leave this session with a well-developed working draft of their specific food safety plan, which becomes the framework for an audit, and can be used to demonstrate individual farm risk-reduction steps. Completion of the first workshop is a prerequisite and basic computer knowledge is required in order to receive the maximum benefit from this session. Please bring a laptop with wireless internet capability.
