Beautiful hikes, bouldering, creek play, salamanders, nature crafts/t-shirt design, camp fires, and two nights in the bunkhouse at Grayson Highlands State Park (GHSP) Mouth of Wilson, Va. Campers should pack a lunch for our first hike picnic on the trail. All other food and snacks will be provided. Sleeping bags are required and a packing list will be shared with all who register. The North Carolina Cooperative Extension is offering a grape growing seminar on Wednesday August 3rd at Stoney Hollow Farm in Robbinsville. The seminar will start at 8:30 am and end after lunch. There will be a vineyard tour to start with, then a lecture on production practices followed by a question and answer session to address any production problems each grower may be experiencing.  Extension Viticulture Specialist Dr Sara Spayd will be leading each session. Anyone interested in growing grapes from the home gardener to a commercial vineyard producer is urged to attend. Swim with fish and learn about all the critters living in your river from local experts! Please join us from 10:30 until Noon on August 3rd for a chance to see underwater life and have some fun in the river. Youth education scientists from Mainspring Conservation Trust, a regional land trust based out of Franklin, will lead the snorkeling expedition in an event funded by the Swain County Community Foundation.

A lifeguard will be on duty. Masks, snorkels, wetsuits, and viewbuckets will be provided. Suggested items to bring include: swimsuit, water shoes, towel, sunscreen, water, sack lunch (immediately following the event).

This section of the Little Tennessee River has over 50 different kinds of fish and 6 mussels living just beneath the water’s surface. How many will you find?

Beautiful hikes, bouldering, creek play, salamanders, nature crafts/t-shirt design, star gazing, camp fires, two nights in the bunkhouse and one night backpacking on the Appalachian Trail in Grayson Highlands State Park (GHSP) Mouth of Wilson, Va. All food and snacks will be provided. Sleeping bags are required for the bunkhouse, all backpacking equipment is provided, and a packing list will be shared with all who register. Comfortable, closed toe, lacing shoes are necessary. Campers will learn a variety of wilderness living skills, team work, and make memories for a lifetime!- Parents will transport to and from the Cooperative Extension office.

The tour will provide an opportunity to see side-by-side comparisons of 21 corn varieties in an on-farm corn variety evaluation test hosted by Wilton Shooter and Sons Farm. Time will be provided to have an informal discussion on issues affecting crops in 2016. Georgia Love, Regional Agronomist with North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, will provide recommendations on proper tissue sampling.

Cumberland County Cooperative Extension and Cape Fear Botanical Garden are excited to offer the Junior Master Gardener Summer Camp for youth ages 9-13.
The camp will be held each Friday beginning June 17 and continue through August 5. Camp hours will be from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm and held at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden.

Cost for the eight week camp is $125.00, which includes all snacks and curriculum materials. Students are responsible for providing a bag lunch, hat, towel, and should wear closed toe shoes. Refunds will be provided only in the event the camp is canceled by Cumberland County Cooperative Extension.

Camp registration and payment fee is due by June 1, 2016. Space is limited so register early! Participants must have or submit a current 4-H enrollment form for registration. 2016 marks the centennial of our National and State Park systems! What a great opportunity to get out and explore. We will be hiking and floating 20 miles over 5 days. This week will bring us to Stone Mountain, Lake James, South Mountain, Chimney Rock, and New River State Parks. We will be learning the state motto, toast, and other various symbols and facts throughout the week. Campers must eat a good breakfast, pack a nutritious lunch and water, and wear comfortable closed toe lacing shoes. Be prepared to carry your lunch, water and some days water shoes and a towel. This experience can open the door to a lifetime of exploration! Parents will transport to and from the Cooperative Extension office.

Instructors: 4-H staff, volunteers, and Junior Leaders.

They will make an assortment of pickles, jams/jellies, etc. with a lunch served.
