There are many ways that artists have worked with nature in art. This workshop will be an artistic based practice rooted in nature that is directly connected to self-awareness, nourishing and healing potentialities, and is appropriate for any skill level. Different methods of artistic expression will be used in the garden’s natural environment. Blending personal self-reflection with reflections on the many meanings of nature, participants and affiliated instructors will experience a variety of artistic processes in the context of the spirit, tactile nature, and diverse spaces within the gardens. Many of the activities can be repeated and utilized after the workshop.

This workshop will be led by Cape Fear Botanical Garden’s (Garden) Artist in Residence Ginny Sykes. Please dress for the outdoors and bring a bagged lunch.

NC Cooperative Extension Center for Applied Technology (CAT building) 2415 Airport Road Marble NC
— 2 days away

The Cherokee County Extension Office is offering a second seminar on finding and identifying wild foods in and around the garden. Last May, over 25 people attended this hands on seminar and most wanted us to offer another one. The class will again be taught by Dr. David Cozzo, an ethnobotanist, specializing in the relationship of the Cherokee to their botanical world. He is an Area Specialized Agent for the North Carolina Cooperative Extension based at the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians Extension Center and is the Project Director for the Revitalization of Traditional Cherokee Artisan Resources. He also teaches courses and has published articles on the nutritional and medical ethnobotany of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians.

The seminar will be held on Thursday May 26th starting 9:30 am at Tri-County’s Center for Applied Technology (CAT) building in Marble. “Many of the plants we call weeds are quite tasty and often more nutritious and hardier than the crops we are trying to grow,” states Dr. Cozzo. This talk will discuss edible plants that grow in or near the garden, as well as those that can be transplanted to other areas in the yard. After a classroom lecture, we will take walking tours through the community garden and local trails to find wild foods. There will be a fee of $10 per person for the class. Please call the Extension office 837-2210 to preregister for this seminar and for directions to the CAT building.

The weekend kicks off with a family-friendly feast at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw on Friday evening featuring special guest Deb Eschmeyer (invited*), Executive Director of Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative and Co-Founder of FoodCorps, a national organization whose mission is to connect kids to healthy food in schools. We will begin with an inspirational conversation with three North Carolina FoodCorps service members, followed by a talk by Eschmeyer about the importance of engaging youth in the food system and physical activity. Featuring delicious food by PICNIC, ice cream from the Howling Cow creamery at NC State University, and drinks provided by The Haw River Brewery and the Haw River Wine Man. Plus: a lively, kid-friendly square dance led by Randy Lewis of the award-winning documentary The Last Barn Dance, bluegrass with Tommy Edwards and the Bluegrass Experience, and entertainment by the Paperhand Puppet Intervention!

Saturday evening we'll be at The Durham Hotel in downtown Durham enjoying an amazing five-course dinner jointly prepared by James Beard Award-winning Chef Andrea Reusing of Lantern Restaurant and President Obama’s former personal chef and assistant White House chef Sam Kass! Kass, who has served as President Obama’s Senior Policy Advisor for Nutrition, will offer thoughts on children’s nutrition and how to help children achieve healthier lifestyles. Also, wine pairings presented by sommelier Maximilian Kast of the Fearrington House Restaurant and entertainment by the Grammy nominated John Brown Jazz Band!

And Sunday...the world-reknown (to us) Farm to Fork Picnic! Over three dozen amazing chefs producing bite-size delectable dishes featuring local, seasonal ingredients grown by some of the area's best farmers. Plus: fourteen local food artisans and breweries, each providing samples of their products, and local wine, coffee and tea companies offering libations for the feast. Live music by local bands Big Fat Gap and the Holland Brothers! It's the tastiest fundraiser for beginning farmer programs you'll find anywhere!

Garden pests are always going to be around but they can usually be controlled without a lot of fuss. Most don’t do any damage, or not enough to worry about, but there are some that need quick action. If you are having trouble deciding what to do in your garden, the upcoming “Pest of the Lawn and Garden” workshop might help you decide what actions to take.

This free workshop will be held on Saturday, June 4 at 10:00 at Morganton Ace Hardware. We’ll talk about what insects are in the garden now and what to expect as the growing season continues. We’ll learn about what the gardener can do to protect his crops and landscape from damaging insects.
