North Carolina Cooperative Extension is at the heart of agriculture in North Carolina, connecting cutting-edge research and academic expertise to those who grow our food and strengthen our communities.
This summer, Garey Fox, dean of NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), set an ambitious goal: visit all 101 Extension local centers statewide – plus the Plants for Human Health Institute in Kannapolis – to experience the impact of Extension experts and programs firsthand.

Wykia Macon (center), director of N.C. Cooperative Extension’s Vance County Center, discusses local Extension programming with College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean Garey Fox (left) and NC State Chancellor Kevin Howell (right).
Dubbed “Expedition Extension,” Fox is using these visits to understand how CALS can continue to support and expand Extension’s reach.
“It’s truly inspiring to see how N.C. Cooperative Extension serves as a pillar of the community,” Fox says.
With more than 65 visits to Extension centers completed in just over a month, Fox has already crisscrossed the state – from Lee to Northampton to Watauga to New Hanover counties — among many others. Follow Fox on LinkedIn and Instagram as he makes his final 34 stops over the next eight weeks on Expedition Extension.
A strategic partnership of NC State and N.C. A&T State universities, along with local, state and federal governments, N.C. Cooperative Extension has transformed science into everyday solutions for communities across the state for over 100 years.
