Arbor Day Celebration - 2011

March 19, 2011
9am - 2pm
State Farmers Market
Raleigh, NC

Come join NC State's Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources faculty, staff and students as we celebrate North Carolina's Arbor Day with give-aways, exhibitors, demonstrations, and posters!

This year's celebration will take place from 9am - 2pm at the State Farmers Market, in Raleigh. 1000 seedlings will be distributed in cooperation with the Triangle Chapter of Society of American Foresters. Youth will also be able to "adopt" a plant to take home. At noon, the winner of the state's Arbor Day Poster Contest will be announced and presented with their award. Smokey Bear will be on hand and a children's activity area is also in the works.

A day is set aside each year in North Carolina, as in many other states, to show just how much trees are appreciated. In 1967 the North Carolina legislature ratified a bill stating in part "Whereas, it is desirable that the planting of seedlings and flowering shrubs be encouraged to promote the beautification and conservation of the vast and varied resources of North Carolina, and whereas the designation of a particular day each year as Arbor Day would encourage and draw attention to a concerted effort by North Carolinians to beautify and conserve the state's resources by planting young trees and shrubs." Arbor Day in North Carolina has been designated as the first Friday following March 15.*

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University would like to help the community celebrate North Carolina's Arbor Day by giving away seedlings in partnership with the Triangle Chapter of SAF. In addition, forest-related organizations including the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources, Raleigh Parks and Recreation, and the NC Forestry Association will be on hand with information and to help answer questions.

If you are contemplating attending college, but don't know what major to pursue, program coordinators and students will be on-hand to share their experiences with you.
