Basil Problem

Chatham County, August 2003

Diagnosis: Bacterial Leaf Spot (Pseudomonas cichorii)

The disease is favored by wet, humid conditions and is disseminated by spashing water or by handling and spreading infected tissue. The bacterium is reported to be seed-borne. Use disease-free seed and transplants. Wider plant spacing can increase air circulation and promote more rapid leaf drying. Remove diseased leaves and plants to reduce inoculum.
