Introduction

The Metropolitan Tree Improvement Alliance (METRIA), in conjunction with the International Ornamental Crabapple Society, held
its eighth conference on June 22-25, 1994 at the U.S. National Arboretum. This document intends to not only convey conference presentations in an accessible text version, but also demonstrate the quality and quantity of information available through the METRIA organization.

Unfortunately, the proceedings are unable to capture the camaraderie experienced by the attendees nor the knowledge they gained from the ‘Trees of the U.S. Capitol Grounds” or “Stressful Sites of the Nation’s Capital” tours. Simply put, it was a good time
had by one and all!

Acknowledgements

The METRIA officers wish to express our most sincere appreciation to the National Arboretum staff for their genuine hospitality and
flawless arrangements. Their work on our behalf helped to ensure another successful gathering. We also want to thank the U.S. Forest Service far again agreeing to provide financial support.
