Description:

UPDATE: Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the 2020 Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteer certification training class will be held exclusively via Zoom. There will be no in-person slots available. All participants will need computer access and must attend 20 of the 26 classes live, via Zoom to receive certification. All classes will be recorded and participants will be able to view and/or review the session.

Do you enjoy gardening and talking with others about it? Do you have a passion for making a difference in your community? If so, consider becoming a part of the Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers! The Extension Master Gardener volunteers are an outreach group part of N.C. Cooperative Extension and N.C. State University. These volunteers serve their community by sharing research-based information on horticulture-related issues and community beautification projects.

To become a certified Extension Master Gardener volunteer, individuals receive horticulture and plant science training from their local Cooperative Extension Center through a 13-week course given by a variety of local speakers and Extension personnel. New volunteers are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of other activities and events throughout the year shadowing veteran volunteers. Some of these events include: hosting a community Flower and Garden Show each spring, an annual Fall Plant Sale, maintaining a local landscape demonstration garden, propagating and managing a greenhouse full of different plant varieties, presenting educational programs, and partnering with local 4-H horticulture clubs and elementary schools.

The Currituck County Extension Master Gardener volunteers are currently accepting applications for interested individuals. Course classes begin on September 8, 2020, and will meet at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 pm. to 8 pm. ending December 10, 2020. The fee for the class is $140 which includes the coursebook, a name tag, a soil sample test, and other course supplies. Because of recent policy changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we only have seven in-person slots available. However, we are going to offer this course online, live for residents that wish to remain at home during these uncertain times. All participants are required to register and pay online at https://currituckmastergardenervolunteers.eventbrite.com and complete the application at  go.ncsu.edu/2020mgapplication. Completed applications must be submitted no later than September 1, 2020, five business days before the event. Those with a strong interest in both gardening and their community are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be comfortable working with a diverse group of people and willing to share their knowledge with both new and experienced gardeners.

For more information or accommodations for persons with disabilities please contact Chris Blaha at 252-232-2262 or ctblaha@ncsu.edu, no later than five business days before the course begins.
