Aliasing Email Addresses on the Mailing List Server

Everyone is subscribed to mailing lists at campus. Depending on who subscribed you and when you were subscribed, you may be subscribed under more than one email address. Along with the change to Google Apps for Education as our e-mail server comes a tightening down of who can send email to a list. Campus has made it so that only people subscribed to a list can send to that list. You tend to only use one email address in communications, so we need the campus server handling mailing lists to accept all valid email addresses that you have. The directions below set your UnityID@ncsu.edu as the primary email address and then set your FirstName_LastName@ncsu.edu address as an alias. The reason we use UnityID@ncsu.edu as the primary is that Unity IDs are permanent. UnityID@ncsu.edu does not change even if your name changes in the future. You will always be able to add any changes to FirstName_LastName@ncsu.edu to your Mailing List settings.

Overview of process

  1. Login to MajorDomo Subscriber Interface with your full_name@ncsu.edu address (will take going back and forth to your email to approve sending your password and then getting your password)
  2. Change that account’s email address to be your UnityID@ncsu.edu
  3. Login to MajorDomo Subscriber Interface with your UnityID@ncsu.edu (again, will take going back and forth to your email a couple of times)
  4. Add your full_name@ncsu.edu address as an alias to your UnityID account.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Aliasing an Email Address on the Campus Mailing List Server

  1. Go to http://lists.ncsu.edu/
  2. Click on Subscriber Interface (a red button near the top, on the left)Majordomo subscriber interface

  4. You probably don’t know your Majordomo password. Skip down to the Lost Password section and fill in blank with your email address as FirstName_LastName@ncsu.edu then click the “Mail My Password” button.Majordomo lost password
  5. Check your email for a new message from the list server that has “CONFIRM from GLOBAL (password)”.
  6. Click the link in step one of the email.
  7. Click the “Accept” button on the webpage you are taken to.
  8. Check your email for a message with the subject “Your password at NC State Email List Services,” and copy the password for the next step.
  9. Go to your browser to the Subscriber Interface at http://lists.ncsu.edu/cgi-bin/mj_wwwusr, Sign In, and in the Registered Users space, enter your address as FirstName_LastName@ncsu.edu and enter the password you copied from the step above, then click the “Sign In” button.
  10. Go to the Unsubscribe or Change settings option (red button near the top) in the Majordomo interface and scroll down the new webpage to the “Changing Your Address” section.   11. Check your email for a new message that has “CONFIRM from GLOBAL (changeaddr)” in the Subject. Click the link in step one of the email.
  12. Click the “Accept” button on the new webpage.
  13. Go to the Subscriber Interface at http://lists.ncsu.edu/cgi-bin/mj_wwwusr.
  14. Sign in and go to the Lost Password section and fill in blank with your email address as UnityID@ncsu.edu – then click the “Mail My Password” button.
  15. Check your email for a new message from the list server that has “CONFIRM from GLOBAL (password).”
  16. Click the link in step one of the email.
  17. Click the “Accept” button on the webpage you are taken to.
  18. Check your email for a new message with the subject “Your password at NC State Email List Services” and copy the password for the next step.
  19. Return to your browser to the Subscriber Interface at http://lists.ncsu.edu/cgi-bin/mj_wwwusr and in the Registered Users area, enter your address as UnityID@ncsu.edu and enter the password you copied from the step above; then, click the “Sign In” button.Majordomo alias
  20. Select “Unsubscribe or Change settings” and scroll down the new webpage to the “Other E-Mail Addresses” section and enter your FirstName_LastName@ncsu.edu into the box then click the “alias” button. The page will reload and you will see a message that the alias command succeeded. If you have another email address (i.e. a county email adddress) you will want to add that address as an alias also.

How can I tell I was successful?

To verify that you have completed all of these steps correctly, when you are signed in with your UnityID@ncsu.edu (it shows that at the top of the “Subscriber Interface” -> “Unsubscribe or Change Settings” page) you should see your firstname_lastname@ncsu.edu address listed under the “Other Addresses” section in the dropdown list to the left of the “Unalias” button.
