Wilson County Tobacco On-farm TestsNorman Harrell
|
There are three tobacco on-farm tests and two demonstrations in 2004 in Wilson County. Listed below are the tests and the locations.
A tobacco harvestability test is being conducted with R. J. Hinnant and Sons. This test will compare harvesting characteristics of ten different varieties.
A tobacco Granville wilt disease test has been completed with Bass
Family Farms. This test will compare different
treatments for controlling Granville wilt. Below is a picture
from the test. The treatment on the left is an untreated check
that is 100% dead and the treatment on the right is a resistant variety
with a fumigate.
An tobacco Official Variety Trial location was conducted with
Agrarian Farms. This location is one of the few on-farm test with
the OVT.
Two demonstrations evaluating cut/strip tobacco are being conducted at Rock Ridge Farms and R. J. Hinnant and Sons. This project is evaluating cutting the tobacco into small pieces prior to curing. We hope to find savings for the farmer and leaf processor. Below is a picture of the farmer, Michael Boyette, and a bale of cut tobacco.
