Treasure Tree Nominations Being Accepted

The Wilson County Master Gardener Volunteers are accepting nominations for 2004-2005 Wilson County Treasure Trees.

The Treasure Tree Program goal is to stimulate an awareness and appreciation of Wilson County's valuable trees. The mission is to recognize, preserve and protect our living heritage, trees. By locating, measuring, and marking trees of unique character within our community, the Treasure Tree Program strives through education, to increase awareness of tree's unique importance and value.

A tree can be considered for Treasure Tree status if it is a species proven to be relatively long-lived in Wilson County and if the health and condition of the tree, as judged by the Treasure Tree Committee, to have at least five years of useful life remaining.

The Wilson County Master Gardeners are asking you to nominate special trees in Wilson County. Nominated trees may or may not be on your own property. Trees can be nominated that are in fields, forests, home yards, along streets, in parks, on commercial property, etc. Please call 237-0113 for a Treasure Tree nomination form. We request tree nominations by August 15 so our committee can photograph the tree before fall. Tree awards will be given out on March 5, 2005 at the Annual Spring Symposium.

What if your tree is accepted as a Treasure Tree? The Treasure Tree Committee will come out and measure the tree (height, width, and circumference) and photograph the tree. If your tree is accepted, you will be presented with a certificate, receive newsletters on care of trees, and the tree will be marked with a Treasure Tree plaque (tree owner's option).

Please nominate your favorite and special trees by August 15. There are so many valuable trees in Wilson that should be recognized state-wide through the Treasure Tree Program. Wilson does have several trees on the North Carolina State Big Tree list.

The Master Gardeners are available to answer home gardening questions each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoon from 1:00-3:00 PM. If you have specific gardening questions on your home lawn or garden please call and ask to speak to a Master Gardener at 237-0113.

Please support our Wilson County Master Gardeners. They do a lot to improve the aesthetics of Wilson County. If you think you would like to join the Master Gardener Volunteer Program call 237-0113 and request an application form.
