Hardiness Zones: 4 to 9 Habit: Deciduous vine with medium to coarse texture. Exposure/Culture: Sun to part shade, adapts to wide range of soil types. According to Dirr, if you can't grow trumpet vine best to give up gardening. Climbing Method /Spread: Aerial roots but needs support. 20 to 40'. Foliage/Flower/Fruit: Orange-red flowers July to frost. Opposite leaves, pinnately compound, 6 to 15" long; 7, 9, 11 leaflets. Cultivars: 'Monbal' - Clusters of up to 12 red flowers, each 4 inches long. Irresetible to hummingbirds, shown. 'Flava' - yellow, cultivated 1842. Comments: Native; thrives on neglect - tolerant of wind, poor soil; best flower production on full sun; flowers on new growth; spreads by underground runners and can become invasive; attracts hummingbirds. Good for covering over rock piles and screening. |
