Hardiness Zones: 6 to 9

Habit: Evergreen to semi evergreen vine. Texture is medium.

Exposure/Culture: Sun to light shade, moist well drained soil. Best flower in full sun. Tough, Pests - none serious. Prune - flowers on new wood.

Climbing Method /Spread: Twining tendrils with adhesive discs at tips, 30 to 50'. Growth rate is rapid.

Foliage/Flower/Fruit: Orange-red 2 inch trumpet shaped flowers in mid-spring; fragrant. Leaves take on a purplish color in winter.

Cultivars: 'Tangerine Beauty' - orange, shown, a J.C. Raultson Arboretum selection, 'Jekyll' - orange on outside, yellow inside, hardy.

Comments: Native from VA and southern lL to FL and LA, cultivated 1653. Excellent for covering a fence or trellis. Name comes from the cross pattern in the stem's pith; tolerates a wide variety of conditions including coastal conditions. Attracts hummingbirds.
