Hardiness Zones: 7 to 9 Habit: Deciduous vine, texture is coarse. Exposure/Culture: Sun; tolerates a variety of soils. Pests - powdery mildew, scale, not limiting. Prune - in spring, flowers on new growth. Climbing Method /Spread: Needs support; partly twining; few aerial roots; 13 to 20'. Rapid growth rate. Foliage/Flower/Fruit: Large, deep orange to red flowers July to frost, 6 to 12 per panicle. Leaves opposite, pinnately compound. Cultivars: 'Thunbergii' - (small, orange), 'Morning Calm' - (coral flowers with a yellow throat; a JC Raulston Arboretum Selection) Comments: Native to Japan, introduced 1800. Less aggressive than C. radicans. Good for upright trellising or over the ground cover. Also consider Campsis x tagliabuana a hybrid between C. g. x C. radicans (from Milan, Italy), which Dirr says is superior in flower and heat tolerance to C. grandiflora. |
