4-H Youth Horticulture Club ProgramProgram DescriptionYouth Horticulture 4-H is an inclusive, special-interest 4-H program serving youth ages 3-19 from all over Wake County. Four clubs meet the second Thursdays each month, September - June, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Wake County Cooperative Extension Office. Youth follow the Junior Master Gardener curriculum, modeled after the successful adult Master Gardener program which offers horticultural and environmental science education, leadership and life skills development, and provides service learning projects. Youth become certified Junior Master Gardeners upon completion of the program. Thirty-nine young people were certified last year.During the summer months the program shifts to a different schedule and somewhat different activities. Typical activities include weeklong classes at the Extension office or at satellite units in the community, photography classes, a gardening contest, a State Fair Patio Garden, work on special projects, practice 4-H presentations/demonstrations for State competition, and prepare for the State Horticulture Judging and Plant Identification competition. Youth are encouraged to pursue the many opportunities available through the National Junior Horticultural Association (NJHA). Four opportunities are available to youth ages 14 and younger in Gardening, Plant Propagation, Environmental Awareness, and Experimental Horticulture. Numerous opportunities are available for youth 15 - 22 years of age. State winners in 4-H horticultural demonstrations and the Horticultural Judging and Plant Identification advance to NJHA competitions. Wake County Youth Horticulture students were awarded twenty-four NJHA Grand or National Awards in 2002. Important Links
