4H Best Friends & Spaces Expanding Services (BASES)Program Description4H-BASES was redesigned in 2003 under the leadership of Wake County 4H Youth Development. 4H -BASES uses a variety of research based curricula to assist youth in developing to their highest potential.Program Components -BASES currently has two primary components. Best Friends Mentoring- Open to youth between the ages of 6 -15 who live in Wake County and are receiving services from Wake County Human Services. Best Friends was developed in 1968 by the Wake County Mental Health Center, in collaboration with a chaplain at North Carolina State University. The program matches community volunteers with children as one to one mentors. Spaces- Open to youth between the ages of 10-15 who live Wake County and experience multiple risk factors are court involved and or at risk for court involvement. Spaces was developed by Michigan State University Extension office promoting a “learning by doing” atmosphere encouraging youth to learn more about themselves internally before practicing their strengths externally in the community. *Parents are required to complete a program orientation before their child can participate in the BASES program.

Referrals & Program AdmissionReferrals are made through 4-H Youth Development. After an initial family assessment has been completed, the appropriate program will be identified. The average wait for receiving a mentor is 6 –12 months depending on the availability of an appropriate mentor and completion of required volunteer screening and training.
