Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

The holiday party season is approaching and even if your calendar fills up with food- filled activities, holiday fun doesn’t have to add extra pounds. By planning ahead you can avoid holiday gremlins, those little things that sneak up on you and say "just this once." Here are some strategies to help you maintain your weight over the holiday season.

  • When faced with a table of holiday goodies, be selective. Choose your favorite food, take a small amount, savor every bite and don’t feel guilty.
  • Remember to eat slowly.
  • If you tend to overeat at parties, try eating a low-calorie snack before leaving the house to curb your appetite. Visit with friends away from the food table.
  • If appetite has nothing to do with whether you eat or not, then plan to limit the amount and kinds of things you’ll eat. After all, why load your plate with potato chips when there are other special foods?
  • Go easy on second helpings and take smaller-sized first servings.
  • In the buffet line stock up on fresh vegetables. Take small portions of casseroles, gravies and desserts. These are generally higher in fat and calories.
  • If the party is at your house, have disposable bowls and plates available for guests to take home the leftovers. Or consider freezing the leftovers for later. Whichever is your choice, remember "out of sight, out of mind."
  • Don’t skip a meal to "save up" for a special event. You’ll end up eating more in the long run. You can plan to eat lighter before and after the event to avoid those extra pounds.
  • Schedule time for exercise. Exercise not only burns calories, but also relieves stress, gives you a chance to reflect on the joys of the season and keeps you out of the kitchen.
  • Enjoy the holiday season. Even if you do "pig out," don’t give up. Just start again tomorrow.
