What’s in Season?

With spring in the air an abundance of fresh, locally grown produce is not far behind. Early spring brings a variety of healthy and tasty options such as cabbage and leafy greens. Fresh spring onions and herbs are available to add zip to salads and other dishes. New potatoes, a good source of potassium, are just the right size for oven roasting or making your favorite potato salad. In mid-to-late spring visit a pick-your-own farm for strawberries that are fresh, juicy and sweet. Combine sliced strawberries with fresh baby spinach, toasted and sliced almonds and chopped onion. Drizzle with your favorite vinaigrette for a salad packed with healthy nutrients.

Visit your local farmers’ market to find other seasonal produce. Purchasing locally grown produce can help to stretch your food dollars and help your family enjoy nutritious fruits and vegetables. In addition, buying locally grown produce supports North Carolina’s farmers.
