Traditions Connect Families

The holiday season is a time for celebration and family traditions are the perfect way to celebrate with your family. Celebrations that include traditions and family rituals are the glue that hold families together. Through celebrations, family members share a sense of belonging, love and connection to others. Family celebrations should be a time of laughter, common memories, family storytelling, food, fun and fellowship.

When blending or creating new family traditions, keep these key points in mind:

  • Involve family members and friends in the process.
  • Don’t try to create a picture perfect celebration. Be realistic about your energy, family and resources.
  • Pay special attention to daily needs. Get plenty of rest, exercise and sleep.
  • Think about the purpose of the celebration. Will it be meaningful to all family members? Will it allow all family members to be comfortable with each other? Does it include activities for all ages and stages of your family?

Keep in mind that traditions and celebrations don’t have to be complicated, stressful events. Families can find joy and fun in doing simple, inexpensive things.
