Active Toys are Best

One way to help children become more physically active is to provide toys that encourage movement as a natural part of
using the toy. When choosing a toy, ask yourself, “Will my the child be active when playing with this toy, or will the child be sitting and watching?” Are batteries needed or does the child provide the energy to move? Is the child’s imagination involved or is the child mesmerized when using the toy?

Choose toys with good design and quality construction. Be a label reader and make note of the suggested age range. Purchase toys that suit your child’s age, interest and abilities.

Help children develop positive attitudes toward active play by participating with them. Family walks, bike rides and flying kites are examples of activities that promote togetherness and better health. Hide and seek, tag, and kick ball are also games that the entire family can enjoy. Children of all ages enjoy dancing and moving to music. Give children jobs that encourage movement such as participating in gardening, helping to wash the car, walking the dog and picking up toys.
