Up the Season Safely |
Most of us will decorate our home with lights, ornaments
and greenery. As you light up your home, remember that this joyous season
can become a dangerous one.
Every year faulty seasonal lights cause thousands of needless injuries.
With proper use and caution your family can avoid tragedy.
Before using holiday lights:
- Make sure the lights have the UL code stamped on the box.
- Inspect last year’s lights for broken or cracked sockets and frayed
wires. If your lights show any of these signs of wear, discard them
and buy new ones.
- Do not use indoor lights outdoors.
- Outdoor lights should be weatherproof and clearly identified for outdoor
use. Remove outdoor lighting as soon as the season is over. Even these
lights are not designed to withstand prolonged exposure to the elements.
- Do not overload extension cords. Outlets should be readily accessible
for quick disconnection if necessary.
- Remember to turn off all holiday lights when you leave your home or
retire for the evening.
