Dress for Comfort and Movement

To help manage body weight and prevent gradual, unhealthy weight gain in adulthood, we are encouraged to engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week. Dressing comfortably and safely will make being active much more pleasant. Dressing for physical activity does not need to be expensive. If you are going to the gym or walking around your neighborhood T-shirts and shorts are perfectly appropriate. T-shirts are considered by many to be the most comfortable workout garment for the upper body. Many people find a breathable synthetic T-shirt to be the most comfortable. For clothing that dries quickly and whisks moisture away from the skin, choose T-shirts and shorts made with synthetic fiber materials.

Proper footwear can prevent injury and provide comfort. It is important that your shoes are sturdy, well-fitting and appropriate for your chosen fitness activity. Well-fitting shoes that are broken in (but not broken down) and socks that provide a cushion are vital, especially if you walk or run on hard surfaces. Be sure to replace walking shoes before they wear out. If you begin a walking regimen and find out that your running shoes wear out quickly, an athletic footwear store might recommend shoes with a long-wearing polyethylene base. This material is more wear-resistant than others. When buying shoes, let fit and function be your guide. However, if you are experiencing discomfort, consult a physician.
