Family Strengthening Awards Opportunity

Please note the following:
This award gives financial recognition for existing programs, not funding for completely new programs. The financial award will be given to the 4-H Extension Unit (county extension office, state 4-H program office, state or local 4-H foundation, etc.) that is involved in the planning and implementation of the award winning program. The total award is $15,000.


Grants for School and Youth Gardens

The National Gardening Association works with sponsoring companies and organizations to provide in-kind grants to projects that actively engage kids in the garden and improve the quality of life for their communities. To be eligible for these awards your school or organization must plan to garden with at least 15 kids between the ages of 3 and 18.

Program Criteria
NGA awards Youth Garden Grants to schools and community organizations with child-centered garden programs. In evaluating grant applications, priority will be given to programs that emphasize one or more of these elements:

How to Apply
Schools, youth groups, community centers, camps, clubs, treatment facilities, and intergenerational groups throughout the United States are eligible. Applicants must plan to garden with at least 15 children between the ages of three and 18 years. Previous Youth Garden Grant winners who wish to reapply may do so, but must wait one year (e.g., if you won in 2007, you can apply again in 2009) and have significantly expanded their garden programs. Grant Distribution
Funded programs will receive gift cards for the purchase of gardening materials and supplies particular to the needs of their program, and an activity package from NGA. The top 50 programs will receive gift cards valued at $500, and 100 will receive $250 gift cards.
* Fifty (50) grants will be awarded to start-up programs that are just beginning or have yet to break ground.
* 100 will be awarded to established programs that have completed one or more seasons of outdoor gardening.
* Both categories are eligible to receive top-level $500 grants.
Each award package includes a Gift Card from The Home Depot ($500 or $250), an activity package from NGA, a "Youth Garden Grant Winner" sign to post in the garden, 12 months of NGA Supporter benefits (includes online garden Q&A service, online gardening and botany courses, and a 10% discount at our Gardening with Kids store).

JC Penney is accepting applications for funds for 4-H afterschool programs.

NFMC Mini-Grants

The National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety is now accepting call for proposals for Special Project and Pilot Study funds for 2008. The purpose of this "mini-grant" program is to support small-scale projects and pilot studies that address prevention of childhood agricultural disease and injury See the attached files for the call for proposals and the PI contact information form. Mix It Up Grants Program

Sponsored by Southern Poverty Law Center and Study Circles Resource Center

Awards grants of up to $250 to support youth-directed projects that focus on identifying, crossing, and challenging social boundaries in schools and communities. Applications should demonstrate youth leadership, collaborative community efforts, and the potential for sustainable work.

State Farm Companies Foundation

Grants will support elementary and secondary schools in creating service-learning programs and projects to improve teacher quality. Grants also made to colleges and universities to establish scholarships, leadership training, coursework in insurance fields.

The foundation will match grants of $50-$350 to help rural libraries acquire new hardcover childrenÍs books. Open to rural libraries.

Aaron Copland Fund for Music Performing Ensembles Program

American Music Center

Grants of up to $20,000 each will support music organizations that perform contemporary American music. Grants are available for general operating support and project support. Open to nonprofits.

American Academy of Dermatology's Shade Structure Grants

To help make it safer to have fun outdoors during the warmer months, the American Academy of Dermatology is offering shade structure grants for schools, park districts, religious institutions, or other nonprofit organizations in need of shade for outdoor locations.

The academy has partnered with Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Companies to significantly increase the number of shade structure grants that will be awarded. Twenty grants will be available to install structures in locations across the United States through the current application process.

Shade structures can be installed in any outdoor location where children and adults gather and are exposed to the harmful rays of the sun, including playgrounds, pools, bleachers, and eating or recreation areas.

In order to be considered, organizations must submit an app- lication that demonstrates a commitment to sun safety and is accompanied by a letter of support from an academy member.

Captain Planet Foundation

The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to fund and support hands-on environmental projects for children and youth. The foundation's objective is to encourage innovative programs that empower children and youth around the world to work individually and collectively to solve environmental problems in their neighborhoods and communities. Through environmental education, the foundation believes that children can achieve a better understanding and appreciation of the world in which they live.

The foundation offers small grants of $500 or less, as well as a limited number of grant awards ranging from $500 to $2,500 each.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old to submit a proposal.

Deadlines for submitting grant applications are June 30, September 30, December 31, and March 31. Grant proposals are reviewed over a period of three months from the date of the submission deadline.

National 4-H Grant Opportunities

The Grants Management Team of National 4-H Council offers grants for youth in local communities, in counties, and on the state level. These grants provide opportunities for young people and adults to take action on issues critical to their lives, their families, and their communities. Youth take the lead in the design of the project, the proposal writing process, the implementation, and the evaluation of funded projects. Please be advised that grant deadlines are determined in conjunction with our funding partners. Once a particular grant is announced, grant proposals are normally solicited for a four- to eight-week period.
