Please note the following:
This award gives financial recognition for existing programs, not
funding for completely new programs. The financial award will be given
to the 4-H Extension Unit (county extension office, state 4-H program
office, state or local 4-H foundation, etc.) that is involved in the
planning and implementation of the award winning program. The total award is $15,000.
Grants for School and Youth Gardens
The National Gardening Association works with sponsoring companies and
organizations to provide in-kind grants to projects that actively engage
kids in the garden and improve the quality of life for their
communities. To be eligible for these awards your school or
organization must plan to garden with at least 15 kids between the ages
of 3 and 18.
Program Criteria
NGA awards Youth Garden Grants to schools and community organizations
with child-centered garden programs. In evaluating grant applications,
priority will be given to programs that emphasize one or more of these
elements:
- educational focus or curricular/program integration
- nutrition or plant-to-food connections
- environmental awareness/education
- entrepreneurship
- social aspects of gardening such as leadership development, team
building, community support, or service-learning.
How to Apply
Schools, youth groups, community centers, camps,
clubs, treatment facilities, and intergenerational groups throughout the
United States are eligible. Applicants must plan to garden with at least
15 children between the ages of three and 18 years. Previous Youth
Garden Grant winners who wish to reapply may do so, but must wait one
year (e.g., if you won in 2007, you can apply again in 2009) and have
significantly expanded their garden programs.

Grant Distribution
Funded programs will receive gift cards for the
purchase of gardening materials and supplies particular to the needs of
their program, and an activity package from NGA. The top 50 programs
will receive gift cards valued at $500, and 100 will receive $250 gift
cards.
* Fifty (50) grants will be awarded to start-up programs that
are just beginning or have yet to break ground.
* 100 will be awarded to established programs that have
completed one or more seasons of outdoor gardening.
* Both categories are eligible to receive top-level $500 grants.
Each award package includes a Gift Card from The Home Depot ($500 or $250), an activity package from NGA, a "Youth Garden Grant Winner" sign to post in the garden, 12 months of NGA Supporter benefits (includes online garden Q&A service, online gardening and botany courses, and a 10% discount at our Gardening with Kids store).

The National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and

American Academy of Dermatology's Shade
Structure Grants
To help make it safer to have fun outdoors during the warmer
months, the American Academy of Dermatology is offering shade structure grants for schools, park districts, religious institutions, or other
nonprofit organizations in need of shade for outdoor locations.
The academy has partnered with Johnson & Johnson Consumer
Products Companies to significantly increase the number of shade
structure grants that will be awarded. Twenty grants will be
available to install structures in locations across the United
States through the current application process.
Shade structures can be installed in any outdoor location where
children and adults gather and are exposed to the harmful rays
of the sun, including playgrounds, pools, bleachers, and eating
or recreation areas.
In order to be considered, organizations must submit an app-
lication that demonstrates a commitment to sun safety and is
accompanied by a letter of support from an academy member.

Captain Planet Foundation
The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to fund and support
hands-on environmental projects for children and youth. The
foundation's objective is to encourage innovative programs that
empower children and youth around the world to work individually
and collectively to solve environmental problems in their
neighborhoods and communities. Through environmental education,
the foundation believes that children can achieve a better
understanding and appreciation of the world in which they live.
The foundation offers small grants of $500 or less, as well as
a limited number of grant awards ranging from $500 to $2,500
each.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old to submit a proposal.
Deadlines for submitting grant applications are June 30,
September 30, December 31, and March 31. Grant proposals are
reviewed over a period of three months from the date of the
submission deadline.

National 4-H Grant Opportunities
The Grants Management Team of National 4-H Council offers grants for youth in local communities, in counties, and on the state level. These grants provide opportunities for young people and adults to take action on issues critical to their lives, their families, and their communities. The Children's Trust Fund
The Children's Trust Fund was established in 1983 by the North Carolina General Assembly (G.S. 110-147) to provide funds for programs and services to prevent child abuse and neglect. Federal Support for Youth and Family Programming

Each year, the Do Something BRICK Award honors 6 outstanding leaders

The General Mills Foundation focuses on grantmaking, employee gift-matching and scholarships. Through specific grant programs, such as Champions Youth Nutrition and Fitness and Celebrating Communities of Color, the Foundation is able to focus on areas of particular need. Grants are targeted to youth nutrition and fitness, arts and culture, education, and social services. The Foundation's largest scholarship program, General Mills Challenge U, has awarded more than $4 million in scholarships since 1997.
The foundation awards grants to improve the lives of children
from infancy through age 18. Grants are available to support
requests for direct services and educational programs. The
foundation supports efforts to promote a positive self-image in
children and youth through opportunities that encourage learning
and expressing themselves.
The objective of the grants is to encourage, coordinate, and
conduct research and evaluation of juvenile justice and
delinquency prevention activities, to provide for public and
private agencies, institutions, justice system agencies.
The focus of the Urban and Rural Community Economic Development program is to create projects that provide employment and business ownership opportunities for low-income people through business, physical, or commercial development. Generally the projects should improve the quality of the economic and social environment of TANF recipients, low-income residents including displaced workers, at-risk teenagers, custodial and non-custodial parents (particularly those of children receiving TANF assistance), individuals residing in public housing, individuals who are homeless, and individuals with developmental disabilities.
The foundation funds grassroots projects that typically are
initiated and run by young people, that demonstrate long-term
viability, and that empower those who traditionally have been
disenfranchised in society. A variety of youth-led efforts will
be funded, including ones that support minority or at-risk youths
in leadership skills.

Grace and Franklin Bernsen Foundation Grants

The Butler Family Fund is concerned with homelessness and criminal justice reform. HUD Youthbuild Program Grants
Youthbuild provides funding to public and private non-profit organizations, that include community-based organizations, community action agencies, state or local housing agencies, community development corporations, and any other entity including States, and units of general local government eligible to provide education and employment training. Migrant Education Even Start is a program designed to break the cycle of poverty and improve the literacy of migrant families through a unified program of family literacy services. These services are defined in law as early childhood education, adult basic education or English Language instruction, and parenting education. Projects provide a number of services and strategies to help parents and children meet their educational goals and to support parents in their role as their child's first teacher.

(LIFPP) is a matching grants program designed to establish
partnerships between The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
(RWJF) and local grantmakers in support of innovative, community-
based projects that focus on underserved and at-risk
populations.

Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. is committed to helping improve the quality of life in the communities where its customers and employees live and work through philanthropic investments. Community Investment is the philanthropic resource base of Pioneer. The specific objectives are to invest the Company's resources in programs that add economic or social value to its communities and Company stakeholders, to expand the Company's reputation as a good corporate citizen, and to initiate collaborative funding programs that address rural economic and social issues.

Funds available: Expectations for cost-sharing depend on the
scope and nature of the project. For museum and community/youth-
based projects, NSF generally supports up to two-thirds of total

Overview: H.B. Fuller Company, through its contributions
program, is committed to building strong communities that create
economic and educational opportunities for children and their
families. Recognizing that healthy families and nurturing
communities are necessary in order to create a healthy
environment for young people, priorities within each
contributions category include: education; community
development; health and human services; environment; and arts and
humanities.
Abbott Laboratories Fund Grants
Grants are made directly by the fund. Cash contributions are
usually given to organizations that service communities in which
Abbott has significant operations or employee populations and to
institutions that provide education or service to the company's
present or potential employees. The fund concentrates on the
support of those institutions whos programs and services possess
the potential of providing both long-term and short-term benefits
to the health care industry. The fund will consider extending
grants to support specific building or capital projects. National
health agencies, hospitals, national welfare agencies, youth
agencies, and local health and welfare organizations also are

Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation
The mission of the foundation is to promote the well-being and
betterment of humankind by assisting people in the US Southeast
to build communities that nurture people, spur enterprise, bridge
differences, foster fairness, and promote civility. Grants will
be made in three program areas: organizational development,
community problem solving, and grassroot leadership

The philanthropy of The Belk Foundation is the public expression of gratitude and commitment shown by the Belk department store organization – and by the Belk family who created it – to the communities that have helped the company to grow and prosper since its establishment in 1888.

A.J. Fletcher Foundation
Grants
The foundation supports nonprofit religious, charitable,

Verizon Foundation Grants
Grants are made by both direct corporate giving and through the
foundation, primarily to social betterment and educational
institutions located in proximity and universities, grades six-12
math and science, fellowship programs, and regional educational
associations. Recent areas of interests in education include
literacy programs, building and equipment grants, faculty
development programs in the sciences and engineering, minority
group students in science and mathematics. The health and
welfare program supports drug and alcohol abuse prevention.
Cultural support is given to theaters, museums, art galleries,

Grants
To strengthen the capacity of an organization or group of
individuals to provide quality arts education programs. Grants
must be matched dollar for dollar, with the exception of programs
serving rural, low-wealth areas.

Partnerships grants are designed to implement long-range,
comprehensive programs that serve to advance and improve the
quality and status of arts in education throughout North
Carolina. Proposals involving nonschool partners (e.g., after
