Scouting for Weeds
Weeds should be surveyed once or twice early in the season. Weed control decisions should be based
on these surveys, although only limited remedial action to control weeds is possible at this point.
A late-season survey will help in making long-range management decisions for the following years,
such as herbicide and rate selection for tobacco and rotational crops. At each stop made for insect
scouting, record the weeds present, their stage (number of leaves or height) and their relative
abundance (light, medium, or heavy). You may want to map specific problem areas in the field.
Thresholds for weeds in tobacco fields have not yet been developed.
