Makia holds a Masters of Arts degree in Educational Technology and Research and a Bachelors of Arts in Education with a minor in American Sign Language. She is currently a doctoral student majoring in Technology Education at North Carolina State University. Makia has a very diverse background. Her professional experience includes a total of nine years of teaching (eight years at the elementary level and one year at the
collegiate
level). Also, she was employed as a job developer/job coach where she assisted deaf and hard of hearing persons to gain employment and served as a communications assistant where she relayed telephone calls and served as a liaison between the hearing and the deaf. Makia is semi-fluent in American Sign Language and have many years of interacting and connecting within the deaf and hard of hearing communities. Her long-term commitments are geared towards obtaining a faculty position and eventually excelling to the highest-level office at a university and becoming a well-renown author and writer.
