On-site wastewater systems that utilize biological filters (i.e. bio- filters) prior to subsurface disposal are recognized as pre-treatment wastewater systems per North Carolina regulations.

The siting criteria and approval requirements for treatment and disposal of wastewater using bio-filters is presented per North Carolina Laws and Rules for Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems, 15A NCAC 18A .1900.

Currently, innovative wastewater system (IWWS) approval status has been granted for two proprietary bio-filters in the State, the Puraflo7 Peat Bio-filter (IWWS-98-1-R2) and Ecoflo7 Peat Bio-filter (IWWS-2000-3) wastewater system. State regulations allow for reductions in wastewater system size and in horizontal and/or vertical separation distances depending upon design flow-rate (proposed use), wastewater quality (strength), soil/site conditions, and site specific analysis/testing.
