Onsite wastewater treatment has become a viable alternative to traditional public sewer works. Since the 1997 Response to Congress on the use of Decentralized Wastewater Technology, several initiatives have developed to overcome the obstacles identified in that response. The National Water Resources Capacity Development Project (the Capacity Development Project) has been funded by congress through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to address some of the issues in onsite and decentralized wastewater treatment. Other efforts are being undertaken by the Consortium of Institutes for Decentralized Wastewater Treatment. Other opportunities for dissemination of decentralized wastewater research and information are provided by the Small Flows Clearinghouse, The National Onsite Wastewater Renovation Association (NOWRA), the Water Environment Federation (WEF), and the National Rural Water Association (NRWA). Research projects, demonstration projects, educational opportunities, and publication opportunities are more available now than ever before for the stakeholders in the onsite and decentralized wastewater field.
