INTRODUCTION to 2001 Version of Money IN/Money OUT

BACKGROUND. With 1997-98 funds, the CEMP #8 (Family & Consumer Economics) team of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service at North Carolina State University commissioned the development by Jan Lloyd and Shirley Usry of four lessons - primarily for worksite audiences, but also for use with other audiences by FC Agents responsible for Family Resource Management programming. Draft materials were given to selected agents for review and initial testing, and a project team of specialists and the authors met with these agents on May 4, 1998. The lessons were completed, and agent training was conducted on September 9 & 16, 1998 for 21 and 23 agents respectively, a total of 44 FCE Agents. Twenty agents agreed to pilot the test curriculum with worksite audiences and report initial results in six months.

All agents with Family Resource Management programming responsibility who did not attend the 1998 training were sent a copy of the curriculum and were also encouraged to schedule at least one series of worksite lessons in 1998-99 and to make follow-up contacts with workshop participants to determine the degree to which they succeeded in reaching self-defined debt reduction and increased savings goals. The recommendation from some 30 agents was to expand and revise the lessons to ensure that all participants created a net worth statement and increased savings goals.

Additional funds from a Program Enhancement grant were used to fund MI/MO expansion and revision by Jan Lloyd and Shirley Usry in 1999, and training for 23 FCE Agents was conducted in April 2000, including the new Windows version of PowerPay as a tool for helping MI/MO participants analyze their debt (Sessions 2-3). The revised curriculum was also sent to agents who could not attend the training, and all agents were asked to provide reports on participant response to the 6-month and 12-month follow-up evaluations.

Seven Family Economics Specialists in other states were asked to review the 2000 version of MI/MO and comment on the usefulness of transforming MI/MO to a web site. Most of them agreed that a train-the-trainer online program would be very useful for Extension Agents and other community educators. (Clemson University requested permission and was sent the necessary materials to use the 2000 print version of Money IN/Money OUT for agent training in South Carolina.)

PURPOSE. The Money IN/Money OUT series provides a standardized curriculum for use by interested agents in every county to motivate worksite and other audiences to set specific personal/family goals and take recommended actions to reduce their consumer debt and increase their personal/family savings.

FORMAT. Money IN/Money OUT-2001 consists of a Home Page linked to an Instructor's Guide for each of six sessions (with links to all handouts) and to 14 supplemental materials to assist the Extension Agent or community educator in preliminary preparations for a train-the-trainer course &/or for direct training of target audiences. Directions are included to modify the program for a 4-session series, although the longer course improves program impact.

CONTENT and POINT OF VIEW of the MI/MO GUIDES. A guide has been prepared for each of the six sessions. Read through each guide carefully and check to see which handouts are provided and which materials you must provide to make them realistic to your specific audience. Note that the guides do not have just one viewpoint, but incorporate two different perspectives -- comments and suggestions directed at you as you get organized and prepare to teach the course -- as well as suggested text directed at the end-audience that you may use in talking to participants of your Money IN/Money OUT Course.

Take the time to go over each item in the master lists of materials for each guide, and choose those materials and activities that are appropriate for a particular audience and the specific amount of time available for each session of Money IN/Money OUT.
