"Proper Storage of Flue-Cured Tobacco"

The guidelines for storing excess tobacco are as follows:

1) Store as much tobacco as possible in curing barns, where heat can be used as needed to keep the moisture content from being too high during prolonged periods of high moisture and humidity. This also helps to manage insects and mold infestations.

2) Carryover tobacco which cannot be stored in curing barns should be carried over in sheets rather than bales, but for either package it is very important to make sure moisture content is low enough that stems will crack when bent. The lamina (midvein) should not be so dry that it will shatter during handling.

3) Follow the guidelines for protecting stored tobacco against on pages 139-140 of 2001 FC Tobacco Information (SEE LINK BELOW!). It is much easier and more effective to apply an insecticide during sheeting or baling than later.

4) The storage area should be clean, dry and have ventilation. Don't stack sheets more than 2 high and allow at least a foot between sheets/bales so air movement is not restricted. Placing the sheets/bales on pallets rather than directly on wood or cement floors is also preferable. Using plastic either beneath or over the top of bales during storage may cause condensation problems and is not suggested.

5) Check stored tobacco periodically, particularly during wet and/or warm periods. Bale temps can be checked with a long-stemmed thermometer and if readings are not higher than about 100 degrees F 2-3 weeks after baling, the tobacco should keep fine.
