4-H: Come, See, Express
4-H News

March - April 2008
DEAR 4-H'ERS, LEADERS, VOLUNTEERS, AND SUPPORTERS:

The year has already started off with a bang. We had a lot of excellent record books turned in this year and we had a wonderful Achievement Night. I can already tell that with everyone's hard work, this year is going to be even better than last year!!

LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENED!!!!

BLAZING NEW HORIZONS

The North Carolina 4-H Volunteer Leaders Conference was held on February 1-3, 2008, at the Sheraton Imperial in the Research Triangle Park. The conference was a great training opportunity for 4-H leaders. They had an incredible line up of workshops that were made available to participants. Cathi Reynolds served as Person County’s representative and attended Saturday’s events. She had the opportunity to meet other 4-H volunteers from across North Carolina, gain leadership skills, obtaining new program ideas for clubs and just had fun. All of the attendees had the opportunity to attend four different workshops of their choice. The North Carolina 4-H Volunteer Leaders Conference is held annually on the first weekend of February, so if you weren't able to attend this year, there is always next year.

4-H ACHIEVEMENT NIGHT

All 4-H'ers who submitted record books were recognized with awards and ribbons at the annual 4-H Achievement Night Program that was held on February 15. All of the club members, leaders, volunteers, 4-H Alumni and their families were invited. We gave each club the opportunity to set up a display to promote their club and to show all of the hard work and accomplishments they had achieved this past year. The Pilgrims 4-H Club set up a display that looked wonderful and it was easy to see that they had done an outstanding job representing 4-H this past year at the local, county, district, and state levels.

Congratulations to the 4-H Volunteer of the Year, Teresa Alexander, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Volunteer Award for her outstanding work as a 4-H volunteer and club leader of the Goatinaround 4-H Club.

In addition to all of the ribbons and certificates, Sarah-Marie Rosin and Ian Leisy were honored as recipients of the 2008 4-H College Scholarship as well as Outstanding 4-H'ers of the Year. We are extremely proud of them for all of their hard work this past year and for serving as two of the Person County 4-H 2007 County Council Officers.

Congratulations to all of the members of the Pilgrims 4-H Club who were recognized for their creative and outstanding work and community service during the past year. They were presented with the annual Special Merit Club Award for their efforts.

COUNTY COUNCIL OFFICERS

Many thanks to the outgoing officers who served during the last calendar year. They were recognized at the Achievement Night and they received their officer pins. Hannah Reynolds, Sarah Marie Rosin, and Ian Leisy have been very dedicated and devoted to the positions they held and were always willing to step in and take the lead. They leave a challenge to the 2008 officers to continue the leadership of 4-H'ers in this county with the same kind of dedication and devotion to the program. Officers for the coming year are:

President: Sarah-Marie Rosin
Vice President: Charity Sharpe
Secretary: Hannah Reynolds
Assistant Secretary: Jaslyn Harris
Reporter: Caleb Sharpe

WHAT'S COMING UP???

DISTRICT TEEN RETREAT

We will have six Person County 4-H’ers joining other 4-H teens for two days full of fun in Nash County on March 7-8. We will leave after school on the 7th and return late Saturday afternoon. We will spend Friday night having fun playing games and enjoying a dance at the local YMCA as well as getting to know everyone. On Saturday, our workshops will include a horticulture workshop, photography workshop and a theatrical experience workshop. We will also be participating in a community service project early that morning. With everyone's help, we hope to have a fun-filled and educational weekend.

4-H SHOOTING SPORTS CLUB

At the end of January, the 4-H Office taught the Hunter Education course which is mandatory for youth to take and pass in order to participate in the 4-H Shooting Sports program as well as get their hunting license, if they so choose. The club itself is planning on taking a group to watch the District Wildlife Shooting tournament on March 15 in order to give the youth an idea of what is available for them. The North Carolina 4-H Office has planned another adult Shooting Sports Workshop which will be held April 11-13 at Millstone 4-H Camp in Ellerbe, North Carolina. If you are interested in getting your child involved, simply contact the 4-H Office for more information at 599-1195.

LIVESTOCK SHOW AND SALE

The annual 4-H Livestock Show & Sale will be held in Hillsborough on April 16 and 17. Person County 4-H'ers are looking forward to participating and are busy trying to raise support money. Our members will show goats, lambs, steers, and hogs. We have a total of 17 participants this year who are looking forward to bringing home some top awards. Also, other 4-H'ers are invited to come and observe the show and sale..

GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 8th Annual 4-H Golf Tournament between Orange and Person County will have a new addition because the Caswell County 4-H program will be hosting it with us this year. The golf tournament will be held Wednesday, May 28 and will once again be sponsored by Piedmont Electric and will take place at the Challenge Golf Course in Graham, North Carolina. The winning team will be sponsored to go to the State 4-H Tournament in September. There will be several door prizes and awards.

You may find a company to support you or a team of four individuals. We will need volunteers this day to help us make lunches for the players. If you will be able to volunteer that day, please call our office.

BETSY-JEFF PENN 4-H SUMMER CAMP

Summer camping opportunities for Person County's campers, ages 8-14, will be offered during the week of June 15 - 20. The cost for the camp this year is $295.00, which covers room, food, transportation, insurance, store money and a shirt. We have a few spots left, so be sure to hurry and get registered.

COUNTY ACTIVITY DAY & COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING

With the records in from last year and Achievement Night over, it is time to look forward to the 2008 4-H County Activity Day. County Activity Day is set for May 10. 4-H'ers who plan to participate are urged to get started planning your presentations. Don't wait until the last minute. A presentation workshop will be offered at the County Council Meeting in April. County winners will advance to District Activity Day, which is scheduled for June 20 in Edgecombe County. Instead of hosting a separate County Council Meeting, we will hold our meeting immediately following County Activity Day.

VISUALLY IMPAIRED WORKSHOP

On Saturday, May 10, after we have completed our presentations for County Activity Day, we will host a workshop around 1:00 PM for the visually impaired group in Person County. After serving lunch for the participants and 4-H youth volunteers, we will be completing a variety of different crafts and playing some games. This event is currently being planned and more details are soon to follow, but please go ahead and save that afternoon and be ready to volunteer for a day full of fun.
