The overall goal of Extension Family and Consumer Science programs is to strengthen and sustain families of Person County. To accomplish this, we have broken our work plan into 5 major areas. Building Healthy Families Building Strong Families Fostering Resiliency for Families in Transition Developing Leadership and Community Capacity Promoting Safe and Healthy Environments To learn more about these areas in general, take a look at our long range plan The primary focus area for our program is to build healthy families by helping families improve the quality of their lives through eating healthy, being active, handling food safely, managing resources for food security and practicing health promoting behaviors. Specific programs offered towards accomplishing this objective include: Color Me Healthy Community presentations are available for church and civic groups on related topics such as: Women Living Healthy, Women Living Well In addition to articles in the Person County Cooperative Extension newsletter, two other newsletters are distributed to interested families through the FCS department. “Growing Together”, a newsletter designed to strengthen parenting skills is distributed monthly to parents of preschoolers through direct mail and the local Child Care Resource and Referral Agency to home day cares and Child Care Centers . “Money Talks”, a newsletter devoted to consumer and basic financial management principles is distributed through direct mail and area worksites. New Home-buyer seminars as well as High School Financial programs for area seniors are also bi-annual events coordinated by Extension with local partnering businesses and agencies. Extension also has become known for food preservation and food safety information, and we are the place to call when it comes to canning and freezing home garden produce!
