Constructed Wetlands
Project (4)

Once the wetland cells were constructed, they were lined with bentonite. Bentonite is a very fine clay, which can be purchased in granular or powder form. Bentonite swells when wet and forms a thick, watertight paste. Granular bentonite is often used to seal around wells or to close old wells. Powdered bentonite was obtained for the wetland cells. This is not a local material and had to be brought in from a western state. Each bag in the above photo contained nearly 2,000 lbs of powdered bentonite. Dry weather was needed for application.
