Onslow CountyConstructed Wetlands
|

Holding water!! Tropical storms Gordon and Helene brought quite a bit of rain to the area. As a result, the wetland cells and holding pond received their first test. Plants had not yet been added to the wetlands (they didn't have any water in them!!), but the rains made plant addition possible. Both purchased plants (cattails) and local plants (cattails, rushes, parrotfeather, pennywort, duckweed, and water hyacinth) have been added since fall 2000. The local plants have done much better than the purchased material obtained from another state. Photos of the plants will be added to the website in the near future. It will take some time to get all eight acres planted as thickly as desired. A variety of wetland plants will be tried, so as to see how they perform.
