Matua Grass Project
(Shortly After Initial Planting)

Matua is a cool-season grass that is a heavy nitrogen feeder. As such, NC livestock producers are currently permitted to apply nitrogen at a higher rate than for other cool-season grasses. The seed suppliers advertize nitrogen application rates in excess of 600 lbs per acre, which is much higher than what is currently permitted.

Data from this project will be used to evaluate nitrogen uptake, forage quality, and groundwater impacts at various levels of nitrogen application on a site near Richlands NC. This photo was taken shortly after planting (December 1998).
