Partial lagoon aeration

Battelle InStreem Unit

During February 1999, Battelle Institute installed two prototype aeration units in an Onslow County nursery lagoon. The intent was to determine if the devices improved treatment and were a feasible alternative to a strict anaerobic process.

The units did have a beneficial impact; however, some design changes were needed to make the units sturdier. The new, redesigned unit (pictured above) was installed in the lagoon in November 2000. One of the questions regarding the use of partial lagoon aeration is: What is the impact on the nitrogen pathway? Are we just increasing the amount of nitrogen volatilized as ammonia, or are we enhancing the nitrification/denitrification process? These are important questions, which will hopefully be answered during monitoring.

Three of the Battelle InStreem units were installed in Wilson Bay during July 2000. In both situations, the intent is to increase the breakdown of benthic organic material through improved circulation of oxygenated water.
