Traveling Gun

Irrigation Calibration

Traveling Gun Irrigation System Calibration:

As with the solid set systems, it is recommended that these systems be calibrated each year. The raingauges are set up perpendicular to the gun cart hose. Operation timing begins when the spray first hits the row of gauges. Timing ends after the cart has passed and spray no longer reaches any of the gauges.

Worksheets are available for computing the application volume applied and precipitation rate. Application volume is influenced by travel speed: faster settings result in less applied, slower settings result in more applied. It is recommended that the livestock producer calculate the volume applied at a few key settings.

Precipitation rate is influenced by the angle of rotation. Smaller angles yield greater precipitation rates than larger angles. Angles less than 180 degrees can produce ponding because of excessive precipitation rates. It may be possible to help the situation by increasing the degree of rotation.
