What is it?

What???

A lagoon CAN be a colorful location. The purple comes from purple sulfur bacteria, which are very much desired in an active, properly functioning lagoon. The green is from algae. This much algae does not normally develop in an active lagoon. It does occur in lagoons that are relatively under-loaded with swine wastes or in lagoons that are no longer in operation. The bubbles are from gases (such as methane) produced during waste decomposition.

This lagoon was being treated with a bacteria additive, which was part of a study to determine the ability of the additive to reduce sludge depths and break-down the lagoon wastes.
