Networking and Educational Seminar on Upholstered Furniture Frames
When: March 16, 2006
Where: Catawba Valley Community College, Hickory, North Carolina
Course Description: The upholstery industry has weathered the storm of furniture imports over the last few years, but the whole industry would benefit with a common discussion of improvements that can be implemented in their operation that would lead to lower manufacturing costs as well as benefit from having a better network of contacts.
This one day seminar provides a networking opportunity for a wide variety of individuals and companies to become better acquainted with other players in the supply chain for furniture frame manufacturing. A list of the makers and buyers of upholstery furniture frames in North Carolina will be provided. A thorough discussion of improvements that can be implemented in their operation that would lead to lower manufacturing costs will be provided. Profit improvement ideas will be presented for all the players in the supply chain for upholstered furniture frames-sawmills, lumber yards, frame manufacturers and frame buyers.

HARDWOOD DRY KILN OPERATOR'S SHORT COURSE

Description: Quality is critical in order to be successful in the dry
lumber market. One of the best and most cost effective methods of insuring quality
is by providing training for your dry kiln operators and their supervisors.
In order to help in this task, North Carolina State University, Wood Products
Extension, will conduct its 35th annual Dry Kiln Operator's Short Course at
Haywood Community College in Clyde, North Carolina, September 23-26, 2003. The
course is sponsored by the Southeastern Dry Kiln Club. The main thrust of the
course is to teach the participants how to operate a kiln on a daily basis including
sample selection and preparation, schedule selection, kiln monitoring, equalizing,
and conditioning. The course participants will not only hear the theory of dry
kiln operation, but will gain hands on experience drying a kiln load of lumber.
The course is designed to give new kiln operators a strong background in drying
lumber but has also proved to be a good refresher course for seasoned operators.

Extension Program will conduct a workshop titled "Improving Your Wood Gluing
Operations" in Raleigh , North Carolina on July 23-24. The course will combine
both classroom presentations and laboratory demonstrations to provide both the
knowledge and practical experience necessary to form a good glue joint. The
course will focus on wood panel (edge gluing) manufacturing and wood veneering.
The course targets supervisors, lead persons, engineers, and plant managers
involved in or responsible for wood gluing operations. Topics will include:
adhesive characteristics; surface preparation; correct edge gluing and veneering

HARDWOOD LUMBER GRADING SHORT COURSE

Course Description: North Carolina State University's Wood Products
Extension in conjunction with the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA)
will conduct a Hardwood Lumber Grading Short Course at North Carolina State
University, March 10-12, 2003. The course is co-sponsored by the Southeastern
Dry Kiln Club. This lumber grading short course can serve as a good introduction
for a new hardwood lumber grader, mill supervisor or sales person. It can also
serve as a good refresher course for a hardwood lumber grader who has been working
several years and wants to fine tune their grading skills. Subjects to be covered
include an in depth review of the rules, how to apply the rules, protecting
hardwood lumber from degrade, and the NHLA sales code. Plenty of time will be

EXCELLENCE IN WOOD PRODUCTS MANUFACTURING

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This independent study course is designed to have students examine and improve the profitability of their wood products manufacturing facility. It is taught at a level appropriate for beginning graduate students who are currently employed in the forest products industry who have not previously been exposed to the manufacturing philosophy of the theory of constraints. his will be accomplished through the use of Eli Goldratt's book "The Goal" and the guidance of the Wood Products Extension faculty. Course information will be provided via the Internet through e-mail and the course web site. Expertise of the faculty include lumber manufacturing and furniture manufacturing. A final report is required of the student making recommendations to management on how to implement the principles learned in the course. business opportunities, and government administrators. Topics covered include
the use, repair and recycling of pallets, opportunities for entrepreneurs to
recycle pallets, how to recover wood from used pallets and produce value added
products such as flooring, paneling, and furniture, as well as support from
the state and local government available for pallet users and entrepreneurs.
Also, the workshop offers the opportunity to network and to exchange ideas.

NORTH CAROLINA WOOD PRODUCTS MAGIC SHOW

is a real need to educate the public, and young people in particular about wood
and the wood products industry. On March 14, 2002, the College of Natural Resources'
Department of Wood and Paper Science will host the first annual North Carolina
Wood Products Magic Show at NC State University. This is an educational program
targeted at 3rd and 4th graders that presents factual information about the
wood products industry in a positive atmosphere. Underlining themes will include
how wood adds value to your quality of life, how the wood products industry
is taking a responsible approach to the use of natural resources, and how science
is used to improve production of recyclable wood products. The Wood Products
Magic Show will feature active, hands-on demonstrations and interactive experiments
related to wood products. Events to be conducted include: House Video, Rock
Stars, Wood Sandwich, Ted the Termite, The 3 Rs, Daily Wood and Bubbling Bazookas,

WOOD TREATMENT RECERTIFICATION TRAINING WORKSHOP NC State University

Description: The Environmental Protection Agency requires that individuals
using formulations containing pentachlorophenol, creosote or inorganic arsenicals
for wood preservation by pressure, spray, dip and brush treatment, for sapstain
and mold control, and for ground line treatment of poles must be licensed to
apply these restricted use chemicals. To meet this need, NC State University's
Wood Products Extension will conduct a half-day Wood Treatment Recertification
Training Workshop. The workshop will be held on the afternoon of December
10, 2001 at the McKimmon Center on the campus of NC State. Topics include a
pesticide applicator recertification briefing, an update of federal regulations,
and environmental issues on the use of CCA pressure treated wood. For additional

Description: The Southeastern Dry Kiln Club in conjunction with Irvington-Moore,
North Carolina State University, and Catawba Valley Community College will host
a Dry Kiln Maintenance Course on May 4 - 5, 2000, in Hickory, North Carolina.
The course will cover the maintenance of dry kiln structures, fan systems, steam
systems including valves, coils and traps, and vent systems. Also covered will
be calibration procedures for kiln controls. Due to the hands-on nature of the
course, attendance will be limited. Dry kiln operators are encouraged to get
their registration in early in order to reserve their place. The Southeastern
Dry Kiln Club 50th Anniversary meeting will follow the Course on Friday afternoon.

Preservation
and Renovation of Historic Wood Structures Workshop
in Winston-Salem, NC
from October 21-22, 1999. For centuries wood has been one of the most common
and easiest to use construction materials. Used properly, wood does not deteriorate.
Misused, it is vulnerable to attack by fungi or termites. This workshop will
provide practical information on wood products and finish durability, types
of exterior wood finishes, and preservation and renovation methods for historic
wood structures. Old Salem is a living-history restoration of the Moravian church
town of Salem founded in 1766. The workshop is designed for architects, engineers,
wood scientists, builders, and others who want to learn the proper ways to protect
and restore wood in historic structures. Attendees of the workshop can also
purchase an optional exploration pass to explore the Old Salem area. Venues
available include: Official restored buildings at Old Salem, The Museum of Early
