NEW BUSINESS STRATEGIES FOR MANUFACTURING CASEGOODS FURNITURE IN NORTH CAROLINA

Course Description: This seminar outlines how smaller casegoods manufacturing operations, 20 to 50 employees, can profitably manufacture casegoods furniture in North Carolina and successfully compete against imports. Topics will include how to use 3-D software to design casegoods and utilize with CNC machine centers, setting up design standards that allow for utilizing a standard panel stocking program in lumber and plywood panels, marketing strategies with retailers and direct to customer sales, employee and factory management strategies to support low labor and overhead costs, and how to use independent furniture designers. Also to be discussed is marketing strategies for retailers, interior designers and home owners. This seminar is co-hosted by the Furniture Program at Catawba Valley Community College, DL Turbyfill, Director. Cost is $40, with lunch included. Course Description: This seminar focuses on how veneer and plywood companies can refocus their marketing efforts from the past large scale casegoods furniture industry to growth areas in upholstery furniture, other non-casegoods furniture lumber and plywood based products (cabinets, contract furniture, institutional furniture) and residential construction. This seminar includes some hands-on sessions to demonstrate 3-D product design as well as making veneer faces manually and small shop pressing techniques. Samples of veneer and plywood components will be available for each attendee to take home. Cost is $40, with lunch included. Course Description: To a great degree drying influences the type and
grade of the products being produced. This course is custom tailored to individual
plants based on their kilns and the products they produce. Covered in the course
are the variables that influence the rate and quality of drying, kiln operation,
evaluating moisture content data, and drying schedules for high temperature
drying. Drying for value added markets including schedules, equalizing, and

Course Description: This course is designed to give the saw filer,
sawyer, and plant manager an understanding of the parameters that influence
saw design and sawing accuracy. Topics that can be covered include saw design,
saw speed, feeds for various depths of cut, side clearances, saw bite calculations,
calculating strain, high strain bandmills, and sawing accuracy. This course
provides the opportunity to break into both classroom and hands on sessions
to measure sawing accuracy and feed rates. This course is custom tailored to
