The Southeastern Dry Kiln Club's History: "KILN COURSE COMPLETED - DRY KILN CLUB ORGANIZED" (Reprinted with permission from the May, 1950 issue of the National Hardwood Magazine) Thirty men from furniture and lumber plants completed the first kiln drying course at N. C. State College, Raleigh, N.C. This enthusiastic group organized a Dry Kiln Club as a means of keeping up with new developments. The first meeting of the club will be held Saturday afternoon, May 13 (1950) at the George C. Brown Company plant, Greensboro, N.C., Roy M. Carter, in charge of Wood Technology Training and Service at N. C. State College, announced today. The kiln drying short course, co-sponsored by the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association, was the first offered by a college in the South. Enrollment, exceeding expectations, was attracted by the intensive training in methods of faster drying, decreasing degrade and controlling moisture during manufacturing. Instructors for the course were E. F. Rasmussen, Kiln Engineer, Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wis.; W. R. Smith, Forest Utilization Service, Asheville, N.C.; and R. M. Carter, School of Forestry, N. C. State College. At the Dry Kiln Club meeting, Henry C. Kendall of the George C. Brown Company will act as host. The May 13 program, starting at 2 p.m., includes a tour of the host companies' seasoning yard, dry kilns and manufacturing plant. Discussion of the new kiln under construction and new methods of drying and conditioning lumber will be guided by the kiln club president, Charles T. Griffin, Halsey Hardwood Company, Edenton, N.C. Other club officers are Vice President Ernest Richmond, the White Furniture Company, Mebane, N.C., and Roy Carter, Secretary. The kiln club meeting will be open to anyone interested in kiln drying.
