Welcome to Extension Forestry North Carolina is a state rich in forest resources. Almost 60 percent, or 18.3 million acres, of the state is considered forested land. Nonindustrial private forest landowners accounted for 13.8 million acres, or 78 percent, of ownership of this timberland. The wise use of this resource is important to the citizens of today and our future generations.Close coordination with the faculty and staff of NC State University and NC A&T University provides research-based information for user application throughout the state. The driving force behind a land-grant institution and mission of Cooperative Extension Services, Extension Forestry provides educational opportunities to off-campus clientele. The state’s 100 County Extension Centers and the Cherokee Indian Reservation Center, serve as distribution centers for that information.

Educational opportunities for adults exist via publications, workshops, videos, conferences, county meetings, and field demonstrations. Advances in technology have allowed us to reach larger numbers of clients through the internet and video conferencing. The Forestry & Environmental Outreach Program provides additional educational opportunities to landowners, professional foresters, and natural resource managers.

North Carolina ranks second in the nation for Christmas tree production, with 35 million trees produced annually in 80 counties.  NC State Faculty help Christmas tree growers produce trees with a positive impact on the environment. At the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center , extension specialists assist growers in finding practical solutions to problems through applied on-farm research and educational programs.

Environmental Education for youth is addressed through the state coordination of Project Learning Tree, an educational curriculum for formal and non-formal educators that uses trees as a “window” to the world and our surrounding environment. The annual Fur, Fish, ‘n Game Rendezvous and various 4-H programs are also a significant part of the youth education program.

Thank you for visiting Extension Forestry’s web page, and we hope the information contained within will be helpful to you and your forest resources.
