Youth Education

The Smith-Lever Act of 1914 created a formal link between land grant universities and agricultural extension work. In addition to assisting landowners, Extension Forestry at NC State University helps fulfill this mission through natural resource programming for youth.

Our partnership with the North Carolina 4-H Program provides valuable hands-on learning opportunties for youth, as well as opportunities to build leadership skills. We work directly with the state 4-H office to judge project and cummulative record books as well as presentations. In addition, Extension Forestry 4-H Programming includes facilitating the WHEP and Forestry state contests.

Environmental Education for youth is also addressed through support and coordination of Project Learning Tree, an educational curriculum for formal and non-formal educators that uses trees as a “window” to the world and our surrounding natural and built environments.
