Sustainable Forestry Teachers' Tour
About the Tour
The Teachers Tour is a 4-day residential
program, that focuses on the social, economic, and environmental aspects
of sustainable forestry. Participants should expect a fast-paced week,
with extended moderate walking, great food, and lots of fun.
The first afternoon provides a short
orientation to the tour and introduces teachers to forestry. Orientation
is followed by a gourmet dinner and a presentation about local history.
Over the next three days, teachers visit a variety of mills (paper,
solid-wood, furniture, plywood) and forests (private industrial, non-industrial,
private, public), and are taken on a variety of educational stops (museums,
state forests, experimental forests, learning centers).
| On the
last day, after reviewing the tour and sharing some insights, the
teachers head home with lots of new friends, information, concepts,
and materials that they can bring into their classrooms. |

History of the Tour
This tour was initiated in North Carolina in 2001 by the Temperate
Forest Foundation, with assistance from local NC agencies. This
is the Tour's fifth year, and it gets bigger and better every year!
The Tour has been held in Asheville for the past five years, but
because it was so popular, in 2004 we started a second tour for
New Bern to expose teachers to forestry in Eastern North Carolina.
The Tours are now completely organized and led by three NC forestry
organizations: The North Carolina Forestry Association, NC State University's
Forestry
& Environmental Outreach Program, and the NC Division of Forest
Resources. To date, over 190 NC teachers have taken the Tour, all
with glowing reviews.
