Research Travel Grants

Encouraging faculty and students from NC State University to travel to Chile is at the core of this project. The project will provide funds specifically for travel to Chile, allocated to the following categories:

  1. NC State University faculty: These funds will cover travel expenses to Chile for each of the 4 project directors and full or partial travel expenses for additional faculty. Funds will be distributed based on the potential for
    a) developing long-term research collaboration,
    b) contributing to classroom education and internationalization of the curriculum, and
    c) disseminating lessons and information on market opportunities and challenges to the U.S. forest industry, landowners, and public.
  2. Student interns: The project will provide two grants for students to travel to Chile for internships. Faculty involved in the project will help locate potential internships, for example with forest industry. The grants will cover travel and related costs (e.g. passports and visa), thus making international internships more viable for students.
  3. Study abroad: The project will award two small scholarships for study abroad, to supplement departmental scholarships and provide and additional incentive to select a university in Chile.
  4. Chilean faculty: Under the project, we will invite three or four research collaborators from Chile, including faculty from the Universidad Austral de Chile and Universidad de Concepcion, to visit NC State, in order to develop research collaborations, guest lecture in courses and potentially in outreach or continuing education venues, encourage student interest in study abroad and internships in Chile, and develop long-term dissertation proposals.
  5. Research assistants: Two NCSU graduate students will work with the research projects developed through faculty sabbaticals. Students who have assistantships in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources will most likely be selected. These funds will cover the students’ full cost of travel to Chile for field work for three months. We expect their participation in the project to lead to MS theses or dissertation proposals. Two Chilean graduate students will receive honoraria to work as counter-parts to the graduate research assistants from NCSU. This will enhance the experience of the NCSU graduate students and provide support to the research projects.

These funds will be allocated by the Project Directors. NCSU and Chilean students or faculty may contact Erin Sills at erin_sills@ncsu.edu to express interest in obtaining travel funds. This page will be updated regularly to describe the commitment of funds.
