About the Workshop
The objective of this 1-day workshop is to provide instruction on four mapping resources available to forestry professionals: GoogleEarth (full), County Mapping Office Websites, ExpertGPS, and NRCS Web Soil Survey. This is NOT a GIS course.

This workshop allows you to take advantage of simpler but powerful technologies that will allow you to produce high quality map products for resource management planning. We will explore how to take aerial photo and topographic map images, with parcel data and modify it for timber stand delineation through use of MS Paint, Word, and mapping software. Acreage may be determined from the printed maps using traditional techniques or digitally through county mapping websites or mapping software.

Workshop Prerequisites
Participants need not have experience with any of the software applications being discussed, but an overall familiarity with personal computing is required. Participants will use NC State University computers in the Jordan Hall Addition forestry computer lab, and work in teams of two (maximum). Due to computer lab size this workshop is limited to 24 participants. If participants wish to bring their personal laptops, they must be equipped with the most recent versions of MS Office and MS Paint. Personal laptops must have wireless capability for use on the NCSU network.

Who Should Attend
This course will be valuable to forestry professionals seeking simple mapping strategies and low-cost software options for their work as natural resources land managers, private consultants, government and private land owners, surveyors, appraisers, and land planners.

About the Instructor
James Jeuck is an Extension Specialist with NCSU Extension Forestry. He has over 15 years experience in digital mapping, GIS, and GPS for forestry applications. Prior to coming to Extension Forestry, James was on the faculty of Haywood Community College as a forestry and GIS instructor. James is a NC Registered Forester and NC Consulting Forester.

Accreditation
This workshop has been approved for 7 contact hours in category 1-CF for CFE credits from Society of American Foresters. Other forms of continuing education will be requested based on needs of those registered. Please indicate your preferred accreditation type on the registration form.

Workshop Location and Lodging
The workshop will be conducted in Jordan Hall Addition, room 3214. Jordan Hall Addition is located at the corner of Western Blvd. and Morrill Drive (diagonally across the street from the WRAL TV tower). A map indicating the location of the workshop and parking will be included with your registration confirmation letter. Lodging is not included in the registration fee. Registration and Fees
The registration fee for the workshop is $95 and includes course training materials, refreshments, simple deli lunch, and computer lab privileges (temporary NCSU login will be provided). Multiple participants from the same company/agency may qualify for group rates (call us to confirm). Lodging is not included in the workshop registration fee. The deadline to register for the workshop is July 24, 2009.

Cancellations
Cancellations received by the FEOP office on or before the registration deadline of July 24 are eligible for a full refund less a 15% service charge. It is not possible to provide a refund after July 24. Sending a substitute participant is recommended in this situation.
