Optional Field Trip

The optional field trip is currently FULL! Please ask when you check in for the conference if space is available.

On Friday (November 5), there will be an optional field trip to visit MeadWestvaco Corporation near Charleston. We will see all aspects of breeding and tree improvement with loblolly pine (Pinus teada), including breeding facilities, progeny and clone testing, vegetative propagation, greenhouse, seed orchard, nursery, and improved pine plantations. We will also visit a biotechnology company, ArborGen, for some forest biotechnology and bioinformatics research.

On the field trip we will see:

  • Second-generation seed orchard
  • Third-cycle seed orchard
  • Mass controlled pollination orchard
  • Top-grafting for flower induction and controlled crossing
  • Breeding greenhouse
  • Nursery for seedling production and rooted cutting
  • Corn and seed processing facilities
  • Progeny tests
  • Progeny/provenance tests
  • Clone tests

There is a charge of $55 (or $75 after September 30th) to participate in the field trip which includes lunch, transportation and refreshments. Those attending the field trip should plan on a full day, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Please indicate on your registration form if you wish to attend the field trip, and include the additional fee in your payment.
