Roger Galloway and Randy Wood
are the Extension Agents in
Montgomery
County that work exclusively with agriculture. Randy has
responsibilities in livestock and
forages.
Roger covers horticulture, landscaping and crop production.
The Area Poultry Agent is Jody C. Smith.
Montgomery County Extension sponsors and helps coordinate
with The Montgomery County Cattlemen's Association, the
Montgomery County Rodeo and Expo, the North Carolina Peach
Festival, the Horsemen's Association, pesticide certification and
youth livestock activities. One-on-one interaction
with clientele in Montgomery County is still what makes the
extension program accessible and extraordinary. We work through
North Carolina State University to obtain researched based
information. This information can be used to increase production
and obtain better marketing.
There are a lot of exciting activities happening with
livestock production. The Montgomery Cattlemen have educational
meetings from October through April. Different marketing and
production practices are discussed at the meetings to help
producers become more efficient. The Horsemen's Association
meets monthly to discuss opportunities in the equine industry.
Montgomery has REINS volunteers that help spread information to people
with interests in horses. These volunteers can set up meetings
or help individuals with concerns. The volunteers are horse
oriented people that have been trained by extension to deal with
horse issues. In 1998 6 youth competed in 4-H livestock
projects. These youth learned about production and care of
goats. Waste Management is also a large category that falls
under livestock. Randy administers the continuing education
credits for liquid waste operators that have swine or poultry.
If you would like to talk with one of the agriculture agents,
please call the office between 8 and 5 Monday through Friday.
The phone number is (910) 576-6011. Let's all work together to make
Montgomery agriculture strong.
