Trees and utilities
Only small maturing trees or lower growing plant material should be placed below or within 20 feet of utility line. The Extension brochure Urban Trees for Use Under Utility Lines has additional recommendations.
Duke Energy is forced to deal with the fact the wrong tree has been planted in the wrong place. Duke uses natural target pruning to remove interfering branches. Large trees planted near a utility are going to be butchered and there is no good way to avoid that. Duke Energy has a certified arborist on staff to deal with your questions. Call 704.382.1537.
Call this number before planting or tilling to avoid cutting underground gas and utility lines. It's a toll free number and a free service to have your lines marked out 1-800-632-4949.
