Pecan weevils feed on the inside of the pecan and chew a hole in the mature shell when through. The white grub drops to the ground, continuing to grow and feed on any available roots beneath the tree. The last week in August through the first week in September, the adults emerge from the ground and fly or crawl back into the tree to mate and lay eggs. The adult uses its weevil type mouth (mouth on a long snout) to make a hole in the tender, green nut. The weevils can be controlled by small producers simply by keeping the trunk of the tree dusted with either 5 percent or 10 percent Sevin dust for the time around September 1. Since 90 percent of the weevils crawl into the tree, they must crawl through the Sevin dust. Growers will be amazed at the number of dead weevils.
