How do we learn to make all those beautiful crafts we see during the holidays? How do we add that "extra- special" touch to the decor of our home with our very own creations of artistic value? We attend the South Central Heritage Skill Leadership Training sessions being held on May 20 & 21 in the Charlie Rose Agri-Expo Center in Fayetteville! There are a variety of sessions to meet everyone's special interest!
Registration is $5 for nonmembers and there are class fees in some classes. See your Special Projects Representative for more extensive class descriptions, costs, and registration forms. The deadline for registration is April 24, 1998.
Everyone who gave their time and talents to the 1998 Lee County Cultural Arts Competition is a true winner at heart! The event was chaired this year by Ann McKoy of the Town and Country Club. Congratulations to the following First Place winners!
County winners progressed to the District Competition that was held on March 19 in Laurinburg. Lee County Winners were:
The County Council held its quarterly meeting on March 13 in the auditorium of the Extension Center with representation from all clubs.
The Counties fund-raising projects for next year will include our annual quilt sale as well as gift wrap sales.
The Council will again sponsor a Humanities Seminar. The topics will focus on North Carolina literary history and writers. The speaker and dates of the sessions will be announced as plans are finalized by the chairman of the event, Mary Ann Eskridge.
The Achievement Night Banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, October 27, 1998. The change from the usual Monday evening was made in an effort to acquire more accomodating facilities. The banquet will be held at the Lee County Enrichment Center.
New Business included a request for volunteers from the Lee County Relay for Life Program. The Council voted to ask each club to contribute a tray of hor'd'oerves for the reception held on Friday evening for cancer survivor participants in the relay. Cancer survivor participants walk, run, or wheelchair the first lap in celebration of their victory. Each club, whose membership includes a cancer survivor or victim, may want to purchase a luminary in honor or memory of those members. A minimum donation of $10 will light one luminary. The forms are available from club officers.
Issue chairpersons and club presidents reported on the progress of current projects.
Environmental Field Day will be held on April 29 & 30. Volunteers are needed! At least three volunteers are necessary each day to help serve drinks at break and again at lunch. Volunteers should plan to arrive at the farm by 10:15 a.m. and are invited to stay for lunch. We encourage volunteers to visit each of the classes. This is an extremely enjoyable event and you will have a great time. Call the Extension service at 775-5624 to volunteer. Be sure to let your Environmental Chairperson know you will be helping.
Interested in helping children to learn how to sew? April Dillon, 4-H Agent and Susan Condlin, FCE Agent will be teaching a small group of 4-Hers basic sewing skills. Student will complete a totebag or a simple project. Susan and April could use your help. The dates are April 17 and 18 from 9 a.m. through 1 p.m. If you would like to help either day or both, call the Extension Center.
For the many lives you touch through your caring and giving , we salute you, Lee County Homemakers! Over 69,000+ lives in North Carolina were positively impacted by Extension Homemakers last year and we're proud to be a part of it. April 19-25 is National Volunteer Week and a great time to surprise yourself with the total CVU hours you have accumulated this year. Remember, they can be carried over from one year to another. If you need forms or help tallying your hours, contact your club president.
The Caring Program provides health insurance for children of the "Working Poor," families that are not eligible for Medicaid and have no other health insurance. The cost for one child per year is $324. Global and Family Issues Chairs are promoting this program and are collecting your "nickels." We encourage you to give as much as you can. The County Council makes up the difference from what the clubs collect. Lee County Extension Homemakers sent their check to the Caring Program again this year. This really makes a big difference in a child's life.
Town & Country's Annual Fashion Show welcomed Spring with an impressive array of fashions. Chaired by Pauline Collins, the evening consisted of a chicken entree dinner, music by Catherine Matthews, shagging by Bud Hunter and Nancy Donald and modeling by twenty-eight ladies, gents, and children. Approximately 200 guests left with smilingfaces, satisfied palates, and plans to go shopping for a new Spring wardrobe.
Congratulations to Lisa Gilliam, grandaughter of Evon Gilliam of the Pocket Club, for receiving one of sixteen McKimmon-Smith-Lowe Scholarships offered by the NC Extension Homemakers Association. This is the second year Lisa has received this scholarship in the amount of $600. She will use it to attend Meredith College in Raleigh. Lisa plans to obtain a degree in Secondary Education and to teach English and Creative Writing on the high school level. We now have one more reason for Lee County to be proud of our young students.
"Spring" District Day was hosted by the Scotland County Homemakers on March 19, 1998 at Belk Center, Saint Andrews Presbyterian College. The theme was "Together We can Rebuild American Values." Among the 229 district members attending were eleven representatives from Lee County. They were: Sylvia Churchwell, Susan Condlin, Colene Cotton, Carol Cox, Ann McKoy, Ellie Miller, Alice Porter, Bernice Briggs, Ethel Smith, Wilma Winstead, and Marilyn Zone.
Challenges to the group were extended by Eleanor Kraus, NCEHA State President, Neil Walters, Director of Scotland County Social Services, and Dr. Sandra Zaslow, South Central District Extension Director.
The South Central Secretaries' Association will be hosting their State Meeting in September, 1998. The girls are working hard to prepare for their guests. A book of raffle tickets for a N.C.State cotton throw was placed in each club's mailbox. Please discuss this fundraiser at your next club meeting. The tickets are only $1 and if we all pitch in, we could lend a lot of support to Cris & Vicki as they try to raise funds to host this special event in Southern Pines!
A young Lee County entrepreneur has bluebird houses for sale for only $10. Come by the Extension Office to see a sample. Call Jason Glass, 774-6185, if interested.
